Foreword

Culture is the irreplaceable means by which people learn to understand each other more deeply and more justly. It comprises a universal language of communication clear to all, irrespective of national or religious identity. Through culture and art, people demonstrate their aspiration to develop humanitarian cooperation and to contribute to the expansion of dialogue between civilizations.

The 59th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia is a spectacular and striking example of international cultural interaction and exchange. Talented artists from different parts of the world gather and lead enriching discussions, share invaluable experiences, and expand humanitarian cooperation between the world’s countries. The geography of La Biennale di Venezia expands year after year, unconditionally and categorically demonstrating that culture has no boundaries.

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of Biennale Arte 2022 because creativity is one of the most significant areas for any country. La Biennale di Venezia sees various international cultural projects initiated, which later develop and further prove that cooperation in the field of the arts is the most fruitful and leads to mutual understanding in all other areas of interaction.

Azerbaijan, which incorporated Eastern and Western cultural values, and where representatives of various nationalities and religions have lived in mutual respect and trust for centuries, has had very positive experiences in the field of cultural dialogue. International festivals, conferences, and exhibitions form an integral part of modern Azerbaijan’s cultural life.

Creative projects, organized abroad, have become a fine tradition. Through the language of art, we tell the world about Azerbaijan, its culture, and its history. Each new event varies in staging and invokes a different spiritual atmosphere in each viewer. It is free and creative communication, and direct human contact, that promote the strengthening of mutual understanding, friendship, and trust.

This year, at Biennale Arte 2022, Azerbaijan presents a fascinating exposition Born to Love in which seven Azerbaijani female artists use modern techniques and materials to realise and convey their ideas. Born to Love could be a reinterpretation of the standards of the time, pervaded with the history of Azerbaijani culture and patterns in cutting edge innovation.
All the projects displayed at the Azerbaijan National Pavilion resound with the central subject of the Biennale, Milk of Dreams, after the children's book of the same title by the surrealist Leonora Carrington, and at the same time talk to imperative social and verifiable highlights of our nation.

Friendliness, mutual understanding, and a genuine interest in art are integral components of creative interaction and, as a result, the development and strengthening of interethnic cultural ties.

The year 2022 marks Azerbaijan’s fifth participation in the Venice Biennale, implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. This year the Azerbaijan Pavilion is proud to present Born to Love , an exhibition of works by seven contemporary Azerbaijani women artists.

Born to Love is a reinterpretation of the principles of the time, imbued with the history of Azerbaijani culture and trends in modern technology.

All the projects presented at the Azerbaijan National Pavilion resonate with the central theme of the Biennale, Milk of Dreams, after the children's book of the same name by the surrealist artist Leonora Carrington, and at the same time speak to important cultural and historical features of our country.

The discovery of nature, life, and the Universe poses enormous challenges to humans. We would all like to understand better who we are, where we came from, and where we are going - we would like to focus on something bigger than ourselves and more significant than the latest electronics or fashion. Our task is to understand as much as we can, and our tool is curiosity, unbound by dogma.

Man expresses the whole cosmos, its spatial structure, its immensity of connections with other things existing in the world; the rhythm and harmony, the personification of incarnations - and all this is united by the wholeness of his worldview, of his outlook. The one, who lives in harmony with himself, with his inner "demon," is in harmony with the whole Universe, for both the order of the Universe and that of man are but different manifestations of the same general fundamental principle.

Today, humanity is on the threshold of a new understanding of the world and its place in the Universe.

The COVID-19 pandemic turned the world upside down. Quarantine has reshaped art territory, and the COVID-19 virus has above all created its realist mythology - about death and disease, which can come suddenly and change the course of humanity's entire life.

The artists of Born to Love have taken up this challenge, an exhibition reimagining the pandemic... Born to Love featuring artworks creating during a times like no other before. Though the pandemic is not over we want to honor our artist community and wish to shine them for their diligence and tenacity in ensuring art always survives.
